Opening in 2009, Cristo Rey Jesuit now has student enrollment of nearly 500 young men and women. Cristo Rey Jesuit offers a rigorous college preparatory education available to students of limited economic resources in the Houston area. A unique Corporate Work Study Program places student in Houston  businesses and nonprofits where they learn the expectations of the corporate world and earn up to 50 percent of the cost of their education. Cristo Rey Jesuit belongs to the national Cristo Rey Network of schools and the national Jesuit Schools Network.

The Job:

The Dean of Student Life is responsible for the creation and administration of programs, policies, events and resources at Cristo Rey Jesuit all aimed at the “development of the whole person,” in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition. This includes extracurricular activities, class level activities, field trips, assemblies, and other school-wide events. The Dean of Student Life supports and supervises club and student council moderators, and coordinates the Cristo Rey Jesuit partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston (BGCGH). The ideal candidate for this position is an adaptable, socially skilled problem solver, who is experienced with the student experience both inside and outside of the classroom, and who has an ability to relate to and communicate with all members of the school community. The Dean of Student Life should also have an awareness of TCCB-ED requirements. Finally, the Dean of Student Life will seek to align all activities with the school’s mission of forming “Men and Women for Others, for the greater glory of God,” and, through all student engagement, foster the six characteristics of our “Profile of the Grad at Grad”: open to growth, committed to justice, religious, loving, intellectually competent, and work experienced.

Primary responsiblities

Club and Student Council Activities: Manage staffing, budgets, stipends, event coordination and promotion for all clubs, with particular emphasis on Student Council activities including elections, pep rallies, Homecoming Spirit Week, Winter Formal and Junior-Senior Prom. Share event information with academic administration and coordinate calendaring with the Dean of Academic Affairs and Operations. Support the creation of new clubs on campus. A list of currently active clubs includes the following: Theater Woods Club Art Club Music Club Student Ambassadors National Honor Society Garden Club Culinary Club Student Council Environmental Club Black Student Union Chess Club Yearbook Eagle Investors Restorative Justice Club

Cultural Celebrations: Build committees to plan for various cultural celebrations throughout the year, including but not limited to: Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Asian Heritage Month.

All-School Assemblies: Work with the CRJ Facilities team and the Assistant Principals for Academics to plan quarterly awards assemblies. Work with Cultural Celebration committees to plan all-school performances, shows, and productions.

Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston: Coordinate after-school activities with the BGCGH Director. Seek out ways to utilize BGCGH resources to support all CRJ Student Life activities.

Student Leadership: Create opportunities and training for students to be visible leaders on campus, including but not limited to leading assemblies, coordinating cultural celebrations, creating communication materials for students.

Parent-Guardian Association: Build relationships with parents/guardians, providing opportunities for them to participate in the life of the school. Develop a governing body for the PGA. Work with the Director of Finance to develop a system for the PGA to raise funds and manage finances.

CRJ Lion Spirit Store: Supervise and support the Spirit Store Coordinator, planning for sales events, design and ordering of apparel, and coordinating with PGA the staffing of the spirit store.

Miscellaneous Events: The Director of Student Life will play a key role in planning and staffing a number of key events on the school calendar. Such events include, but are not limited to:

  • “Building the Pride” Week: Organize activities for incoming freshmen to learn about Cristo Rey Jesuit and to build relationships with classmates.
  • “Building the Kingdom” Day: Work with Campus Ministry in planning this all-school, all-day event. The Dean of Student Life will be tasked, in particular, with planning activities for the afternoon of this day, upon the return of all students from service work.
  • The Mane Event: Plan and coordinate this all-school talent show event.
  • Food Exemption Days: Work closely with the Director of Facilities to bring outside food vendors on campus for lunch.
  • CRJ Small Communities: Coordinate with the Dean of Campus Ministry monthly formation/programming/activities for grade-level small groups.
qualifications: 
  • A Master’s degree in school administration or equivalent is highly desirable
  • At least three years of administrative experience working closely with students
  • Three years of classroom teaching experience is preferred
  • At least three years of administrative experience or in another leadership role working closely with students
knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, listening and presentation skills
  • Organizational and staff planning skills
  • Ability to organize work, engage in a variety of tasks, and meet deadlines
  • High degree of initiative and independent judgment
  • High level of energy and positive attitude
  • Respect for unique Catholic, Jesuit identity of school
  • Willingness to engage in personal educational and faith development
Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 
  • Regularly interact with students, parents, staff and visitors. 
  • Work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods of time. 
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
