Pat Hall, member of the St. Clare Knights of Columbus Council 9708, presented Fr. TJ Martinez, SJ, President of Cristo Rey Jesuit a generous donation in support of the Magis Society Education Fund. "It was pleasure to visit your school and learn more about the Cristo Rey concept. I am pleased that our Council is enthusiastic about Jesuit education for the severely poor youth in our community. We look forward to sharing our Council's action with other Councils in the Archdiocese in hopes they will decide to join us in this effort" said Mr. Hall.
The Cristo Rey Magis Society Education Fund was created as a way to raise funds to support the students. All of the students will participate in the Corporate Work-Study Program in which each student works one day a week in entry-level positions in business offices throughout Houston. This program pays for more than 70% of their tuition when the school is at capacity. The Magis Fund will help bridge this financial gap.
On August 10, 2009 100 motivated young men and women will walk through our doors as members of the inaugural class of Cristo Rey Jesuit. "They are coming from the poorest communities in the city seeking an opportunity to change their lives and their futures. This school provides it." says Fr. Martinez, SJ. "The expectations are high; the college prep curriculum is tough; the corporate work-study program is demanding, and the students are responsible for earning much of their tuition...This unique program sets Cristo Rey Jesuit students apart from their peers and begins to transform the lives of the students, and Houston."
