A new Jesuit college-preparatory high school geared to lower-income students is planned for east Houston within the next two years.
"The issue now is when will it be opened and exactly where on the east side of Houston it should be located," said Jeff Thielman, vice president for new initiatives for the board of the Chicago-based Cristo Rey Network.
Houston will be the 20th high school in the Roman Catholic network, which also has schools in New York, Denver, Baltimore, Detroit and Boston. The school, which has yet to be named, was approved by the network's 11-member board Wednesday.
The Rev. Antonio "T.J." Martinez Jr., a Jesuit who earned his master's degree in education from Harvard University, has been named president of the school. He will move to Houston next week to live with the Jesuit community at Strake Jesuit High School, he said.
