Cristo Rey Jesuit Crest to be Placed in Entryway

Will Cunningham and Fr. TJ Martinez, SJ, look at a mockup of the crest

Fr. TJ Martinez and Will Cunningham check on the progress of the beautiful Cristo Rey Jesuit Crest at National Terrazzo, Tile, and Marble Inc.. The crest will measure over 7’x 5’ when it is completed and will grace the interior entry of the school. Will Cunningham, Senior Designer at BrandExtract, a Houston-based brand development firm, created the school’s crest and logo and is thrilled to see his design in 3-D!

The process is a long one.

1First, the terrazzo company made a life-size computerized image of the crest design.

2Then a template of the actual piece was made from strips of metal which were soldered together. Notice the intricate design! This was done at National Terrazzo's warehouse.

3The stone colors and grout need to be carefully chosen to match the colors of the designed crest.

4The terrazzo workers will then cut out a large section of the floor to accommodate the crest design. The metal template will be placed in the floor---it should be noted that when placed in the floor the template will be higher than the rest of the floor in the entry.

5The metal template will be glued down.

6Sections of the design will be taped off as one color at a time will be poured into place. Each colored area will be allowed to dry before another section is taped off for the next color so that the colors do not run into each other.

7Finally, the taped areas are pulled off and the process of leveling the crest to the rest of the floor begins. The crest is ground down, holes are filled in with grout one color at a time, and the crest is polished and sealed. It should take at least 3-4 weeks to complete.
