From
the President's Perspective
Tell me a story . . . Over the past two weeks, the story of Cristo Rey Jesuit - Houston’s newest college preparatory school exclusively serving the most economically disadvantaged children in the city – has gotten bigger. To be precise, we have added 83 more stories to the dream come true story school of 2009. Three weeks ago, 83 freshmen joined our family and reminded me, more powerfully than anything else this past year, why this school stands as a place of hope and promise for so many.
On Monday morning, August 10th, I watched Eduardo cross our college prep threshold. He comes from a single parent family and is tenderly cared for by his mom who sells tortillas to a local supermarket to support her family of five. The Ceja brothers, who come from a family of 8, worked summer jobs so they could pay the $25/mo. minimal tuition to attend Cristo Rey Jesuit as their one chance to get to college. And I could not forget Sarah, a student who towers over me (not that hard to do!) and comes from a Sudanese refugee community, many of whom escaped the war-torn country to seek a better life in this country. There are 80 more stories just as moving, just as powerful, just as inspiring as Eduardo’s, the Cejas' and Sarah’s. Read

Look Who's Talking

The opening of Houston’s newest and most innovative Catholic high school – the school that combines faith, a rigorous academic program and a corporate work-study program – has captured the attention of the news media. Reporters from across the city have descended upon Cristo Rey Jesuit, her administration, and her first class of students to bring news of one of the most promising educational programs started in the southwest part of the United States. Corporate Houston Commits

Compelled by the school’s mission, its outreach to the most disadvantaged communities, the chance to mentor teenagers into a better life, and the reality of getting a very well trained entry-level, full time employee, some of the most prestigious corporations in Houston responded and have become the founding members of a school that has been set on a course to not only change the lives of her students – but of Houston as well.
